Medium Term Accommodation

Tailored Medium Term Accommodation for NDIS Participants

At Sapphire Support, we understand that finding the right accommodation and support during a transition can feel overwhelming. Our Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) services are designed to provide participants with a safe, comfortable and supportive place to stay while they wait for their longer-term housing solution.

We work with participants, families, support coordinators and other professionals to help make the MTA process as simple and stress-free as possible.

What Is NDIS Medium Term Accommodation?

Medium Term Accommodation (MTA) is an NDIS-funded support designed for participants who have a confirmed long-term housing solution but are temporarily unable to move into it.

MTA can provide a suitable place to live while a participant waits for their permanent home to become available, such as while an SDA dwelling is being completed or a home is being modified.

MTA is generally provided for a limited period and is intended to bridge the gap between a participant’s current circumstances and their confirmed long-term housing solution.

MTA and STA – What’s the Difference?

Although both MTA and Short Term Accommodation (STA) involve temporary accommodation, they have different purposes.

MTA is generally used when a participant has a confirmed long-term housing outcome but cannot move into it yet.

STA, sometimes referred to as respite, provides a temporary break from a participant’s usual living environment and can provide participants and their informal supports with an opportunity to have a planned break.

Our team can help participants and their support networks understand which type of accommodation may be appropriate for their individual circumstances.

Who May Be Eligible for MTA?

MTA is generally intended for NDIS participants who:

  • Have a confirmed long-term housing solution.
  • Are temporarily unable to move into their permanent accommodation.
  • Have an identified reason for requiring temporary accommodation.
  • Have appropriate MTA funding approved within their NDIS plan.
  • Have evidence supporting their longer-term housing outcome and expected move-in arrangements.

MTA funding and eligibility are determined by the NDIA, and approval should be obtained before arrangements are made.

How Sapphire Support Can Help

Navigating temporary accommodation, support requirements and transition arrangements can be complicated.

At Sapphire Support, we work alongside participants and their support networks to coordinate an MTA arrangement that reflects their individual needs, preferences and goals.

Our team can assist with:

Accommodation Coordination

We can help identify accommodation options that are suitable for the participant’s accessibility, mobility, privacy, safety and support requirements.

Individualised Support

Support can be arranged according to the participant’s needs and approved supports, including assistance with daily living, personal care, community access and other agreed support requirements.

24-Hour Support Options

Where appropriate and within the participant’s approved supports, we can coordinate support throughout the day and overnight to help participants feel safe and comfortable in their temporary accommodation.

Meals and Daily Living

We can support participants with meal planning, shopping, meal preparation and other daily living activities according to their individual needs and support arrangements.

Community Participation

MTA can be an opportunity to experience a new environment and participate in activities that are meaningful to the participant.

This may include:

  • Community outings
  • Shopping
  • Parks and recreational activities
  • Sporting activities
  • Cafés and restaurants
  • Local attractions
  • Social activities
  • Appointments and community access

Equipment & Accessibility

Where required, we can assist with coordinating appropriate equipment and accessibility requirements before the participant moves into their temporary accommodation.

What Could an MTA Stay Look Like?

Every participant’s MTA experience will be different. Depending on their circumstances, an MTA arrangement may include:

  • Accessible temporary accommodation suited to the participant’s needs.
  • Individualised one-on-one support.
  • Assistance with personal care and daily living.
  • Support with household tasks and routines.
  • Community participation and social activities.
  • Support during the day and/or overnight where appropriate.
  • Assistance to maintain existing routines and important relationships.
  • Support to prepare for the participant’s transition into their permanent home.

Benefits of MTA

A well-planned MTA arrangement can provide participants with an opportunity to:

  • Experience a safe and suitable temporary living environment.
  • Develop greater independence and confidence.
  • Maintain routines and daily living skills.
  • Explore new environments and communities.
  • Participate in meaningful activities.
  • Build relationships and social connections.
  • Prepare for their transition into permanent accommodation.
  • Experience greater choice and control over their living arrangements.

A Person-Centred Approach

At Sapphire Support, we believe temporary accommodation should feel like more than simply having somewhere to stay.

We take the time to understand the participant’s preferences, routines, communication style, support needs, goals and interests so that their experience is personalised and meaningful.

Our team works collaboratively with participants, families, support coordinators, guardians, allied health professionals and other members of the participant’s support network.

We Make the Process Easier

From identifying support requirements to coordinating services, our team can help reduce the stress involved in arranging temporary accommodation.

Individualised Support

We don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. Support is tailored to the participant and their individual circumstances.

Experienced Support Team

Our experienced Disability Support Workers are committed to providing professional, respectful and reliable support.

Focus on Independence

Our goal is to support participants to maintain and develop their independence while preparing for their long-term housing solution.

Support From Planning Through to Transition

We can work alongside participants throughout their MTA experience and help support a smooth transition towards their permanent accommodation.
